Australia Colombia Business Council Announces New Presidency

Oct 4, 2024

The Australia Colombia Business Council (ACBC) is excited to announce a new chapter in its leadership, marking a continued commitment to fostering diplomatic and business relations between Australia and Colombia. As we prepare for the milestone of 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, this change in leadership aligns with our ongoing mission to strengthen ties, grow the business community, and open new avenues for trade and diplomacy.

The ACBC was founded 11 years ago by Michael Cullen, a respected leader from FTI Consulting, who laid the groundwork for the Council’s advocacy and strategic focus on deepening bilateral ties. Under his leadership, the ACBC played a pivotal role in lobbying for the Australian Embassy in Colombia and elevating diplomatic efforts between the two nations. Cullen’s vision and determination set the Council on a path of influence and growth.

“When we first founded the Australia Colombia Business Council over a decade ago, our goal was simple—to bring our two nations closer together through diplomacy and business. Reflecting on those early days, I’m proud of how far we’ve come. We’ve achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of the Australian Embassy in Colombia and the strengthening of bilateral trade. It’s been inspiring to see the ACBC evolve under new leadership, and I have no doubt that Carlos Felipe will continue to push boundaries and create new opportunities for both countries.”

– Michael Cullen, ACBC Founder and Former President

In 2023, the presidency was passed to Mark De Castro, General Manager for Colombia at Orica. Under Mark’s leadership, 2024 was a transformative year for the ACBC. A full strategic branding process was undertaken, with a refreshed brand identity and a clearly defined “why.” With the support of The Ideas Factory, the ACBC also developed an organizational model and offer that established a robust framework for the future, while preserving the integrity of its core values.

With this strategic foundation in place, the ACBC has now established several key subcommittees aimed at driving impactful initiatives that align with the Council’s mission: “We connect, engage, and amplify opportunities for businesses, governments, and individuals in Colombia and Australia.” These subcommittees include:

  1. Resources (Mining, Petroleum, Oil & Gas)
  2. Education
  3. Infrastructure
  4. Security
  5. Direct Flight Lobby
  6. Atlas Business Community
  7. 50-Year Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

In addition to these achievements, the ACBC recently launched a new website, generously donated by The Ideas Factory, further enhancing our digital presence and member engagement. Coming soon, we will be introducing the Doing Business In Colombia Business Atlas directory, a valuable tool designed to connect the business community across both nations.

“Looking back on my time as President of the Australia Colombia Business Council, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. As I hand over the leadership, I reflect on the progress we’ve made and remain excited for what’s ahead. I know Carlos Felipe’s leadership will continue to drive the ACBC’s vision forward, and I look forward to contributing from a new role on the board.”

– Mark De Castro, Former President, ACBC

The ACBC is proud to welcome Carlos Felipe Barrera, Managing Director of John T. Boyd Company, as the new President. Carlos brings a wealth of industry experience and a forward-thinking approach that will undoubtedly drive the Council’s objectives in the years ahead. Alongside Carlos, Jes Schroeder, CEO and Co-founder of The Ideas Factory, will continue in her role as Vice President, ensuring continuity and collaboration as the Council enters this exciting phase.

‘I’m honored to assume this new role and will lead the ACBC focusing on building bridges and inspiring collective action between Australia and Colombia’.

 – Carlos Felipe Barrera, President, ACBC

As we move through the remainder of 2024 and look to the future, the ACBC’s focus will be on deploying our strategy, enhancing the sense of community, advancing impactful projects, and diversifying the board. Our goal is to open new areas of opportunity, increase diplomatic and trade negotiations, and position the ACBC as a catalyst for growth in both countries.

With the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Colombia approaching in 2025, we are committed to making this a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship. The ACBC will continue to build on the strong foundations set by previous leadership, ensuring a prosperous future for both nations.

We look forward to working together to advance our shared goals and to celebrate this significant milestone with our members, partners, and the broader community.
