Strengthening Australia–Colombia Business Ties Through Insightful Dialogue

Mar 17, 2026

The Australia Colombia Business Council (ACBC) was pleased to join a breakfast briefing hosted by Ambassador Anna Chrisp, who generously invited members and partners to Bogota’s Jockey Club for an engaging discussion on Colombia’s evolving political landscape. The Ambassador organised the session together with her team, creating a valuable space for dialogue between government representatives and the business community.

The session featured Sergio Guzmán, Director of Colombia Risk Analysis, who delivered a comprehensive briefing on the current state of play in Colombia. His analysis focused on three critical areas shaping the country’s trajectory.

The outcomes of the recent congressional elections and their broader implications. The positioning of presidential candidates, including policy directions and campaign narratives. Potential presidential runoff scenarios and their impacts across politics, the economy, society, and security.

Sergio’s insights provided valuable context for Australian businesses and investors seeking to better understand risk, opportunity, and timing in Colombia, particularly in a period defined by uncertainty and transformation.

Highlight

A key highlight of the session was the participation of Diana Nelson, Director of the Latin America and Caribbean Section at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Her presence reinforced the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to deepening engagement with the region.

Diana’s visit signals a continued and growing interest from Australia in strengthening commercial, diplomatic, and institutional ties with Colombia. As both countries navigate shifting global dynamics, there is a clear opportunity to build more connected and resilient business relationships, particularly across sectors such as mining, energy, infrastructure, and education.

The discussion sparked thoughtful reflections from attendees across industries. Perspectives ranged from political and economic outlooks to sector-specific considerations, highlighting how closely aligned business strategy is with geopolitical context.

Participants described the session as:

  • “A very good discussion and insightful analysis.” – Manuelangel Aldana
  •  “A great two hours full of interesting and knowledgeable comments.” – Stephen Newton, CEO Southern Cross
  •  “A truly fruitful meeting that helped us better understand the turning point we are currently facing as a country and as a democracy.” – Alberto Mejía

The session also underscored the importance of coordinated communication and engagement, particularly in a highly dynamic and at times polarised political environment.

Ultimately, forums like these play a critical role in strengthening the bridge between Australia and Colombia. By fostering informed dialogue and shared understanding, ACBC continues to support its members in navigating complexity and identifying long term opportunities in the region.
